THE Borders Regional Council is mounting a 00,000 survey to determine the scope for a multi-purpose transport system on routes no longer served by commercial passenger carriers.
There are 1200 miles of rural roads in the Regional Council area, lacking public transport. The intention is to replace such lost services by a goods and passenger service covering public health, school, office and other inter-Region business and carrying passengers.
If acceptable and regarded as economic—in the sense of being cheaper to run than a subsidised public service—this could be operational next year.
