The six-monthly cliff-hanger on whether or not Britain will get another deferment of the rules from Brussels from the present date of June 31 will go on. "We still can't plan more than six months at a time because that is the longest deferment we can get," he told the committee.

Committee chairman Mr John Davies asked Dr Gilbert why it was possible only to get six months' deferment at a time. The Minister said : "It's not for me to challenge the inscrutability of the EEC."

Dr Gilbert told the committee that Britain is now demanding fewer changes in the legislation on hours than Ireland whom he described as the country closest to our thinking.
