Mr N. Hetherington, defending, said that the conviction in 1975 occurred when Masson was driving his own car home and ran off the road. He reported the accident to the police and was breathalysed. He had had a provisional licence previously but because he had been driving light vehicles he allowed it to lapse.
Masson's mother held an 0licence for two vehicles and was prepared to put him through the training centre and employ him to drive one of them.
The LA said Masson had made a bad start but he would grant a provisional licence from June 1.
Mr Graham Little of Chertsey Bank, Currock, Carlisle, convicted for drinking and driving in 1974, said he got his licence back after 12 months. While disqualified he had been working as a tyre fitter for National Tyres and had kept his hand in by driving in the yard and on sites.
Granting a licence with a severe warning, the LA said Little would not be "going back on the road cold."
