There was a surprise birthday present this year for Bernard Atkins—whose company Atkins of Derby is featured in this week's issue of CM—from his wife.
In reminiscing about the good old days, he's always praised the faithful Gardner three-cylinder diesel which ran untouched for so many thousand miles in the vehicle which he drove himself in the early days of the business, in the Twenties. So the family started a search for one which, when found, was stripped and rebuilt in the company workshop. This was the birthday present.
