HOW to Avoid GV9s

BASED on Ministry of Transport vehicle examiners' requirements, two inspection forms have been issued by the West Midland Maintenance Advisory Committee for goods vehicles, for use by operators who have their own repair facilities in addition to those whose maintenance is performed by a garage. One form covers rigid vehicles and the other trailers and semi-trailers, the number of items on the forms being 54 and 31 respectively.

The committee was inaugurated in 1955 with the backing of Mr. W. P. James. the then West Midland Licensing Authority for goods vehicles; the new pioneering move has the full support of Mr. John Else, the present West Midland LA, and his area mechanical engineers.

At a Press conference on Monday, Mr. A. S. Gilman of British Road Services, chairman of the committee, pointed out that the forms represented the first opportunity that vehicle operators would have to obtain a schedule based on examiners' requirements.

Specimen copies of the form, boldly entitled " Avoid GV9s " in each case, have been sent to every West Midland member of the RHA and TRTA, both of which are represented on the committee, and to national council members of these associations throughout the country. Forms can be purchased at the rate of 3s. for 12: 5s. 6d. for 25; 10s. for 50. and 17s. 6d. for 100.

Simplicity is the keynote. A square against each item is filled in by the scrutineer with a tick if there is no fault and a cross if attention is necessary. On the last page three columns give the list numbers of items requiring attention, the date cleared and signature of the checker. The items are supplementary to those covered by day-to-day servicing and complementary to the recommendations of manufacturers.

In a memorandum supplied to the Press it was noted that, whilst the committee's objective was to improve maintenance by encouragement and persuasion, the LA would not hesitate to enforce good maintenance if necessary by, the suspension or revocation of licences of all classes.
