Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AFEATURE of the new UDS tractor is that prospective purchasers are given the choice between a Dorman' four-cylindered oil engine of 46 b.h.p. and a Meadows fourcylindered unit, also burning oil fuel, of 65 b.h.p. With the exception of the power units and braking systems, the specification is common to both models, the components being of a robust nature in keeping with the high engine power available.

A 121-in.-diameter single-plate disc-type clutch takes the drive to a five-speed-and-reverse gearbox, built as a unit around the rear 'axle. For simplicity and ease of operation the clutch is arranged for hand control. The front axle is an H-section beam having its deepest section in the centre, where it is pivotally mounted between extensions of the main-frame structure. An 18-in, wheel controls the wormand-sector steering mechanism. -the front wheels are fitted with 7.50 by IS-in. tyres, and the rear wheels with 12.75 by 32-in. equipment—pneumatics in both eases. The approximate weight of the machine is 3 tons 12 cwt. with Meadows engine, and 3 tons 9 cwt. with a Dorman unit, the, addition of wheel v.eights, and water ballast in the rear tyres, giving another 14 tons Mier: necessa ry.

In the case of the Meadows-engined tractor, Rendk brakes are used, their diameter being 17:1 ins., with 3-in.wide brake facings. The (lining brakes on the model with Dorman power unit are Ifq ins, in diameter, with 4-in. facings. In the latter case, independent control of the rightand left-hand set of shoes is provided, in addition to a master brake.

At a governed speed of 1,275 r.p.m. in both instances, the following are the drawbar figures, those for the Meadows engine being estimated, and those for the Dorman unit actual:—Meadows engine: First gear, 7,000 lb.; second, 5,000 lb.; third, 4,000 lb.; fourth, 3,000 lb. Dorman engine: First. 6,000 lb.; second. 4.500 lb.: third, 3,500 lb.; fourth, 2,500 lb.

The drawbar is of the swinging type, being fully adjust able to the extent of 8 ins.—side to side—with a locking device to ensure positive location in any offset position. A 151-in.-diameter belt pulley, with 7-in. face, is provided on the Meadows-engined machine, and one of the same diameter, but with a 6-ill, face, on the Dorman-engined tractor.

In the case of the power take-off, the speed is 575 r.p.m.,

the drive being transmitted through bevel gearing. Both models are equipped with electric starter motor, the components being of C.A.V. make. Smarting, either by motor or hand cranking, is facilitated by the use of a halfcompression device.

UDS tractors, which are made by Minneapolis-Moline (England). Ltd.. for Sale 'Filmy and Co., I.td., Wokingharn, Berkshire, will bc exhibited at the forthcoming Royal Show. A37
