AN addition to the growing number of highly mobile farm vehicles is the Sun Mechanical Cart, made by Sun Engineering(Crowle), Ltd., Crowle, Scunthorpe, Lincs. A three-wheeled tipper, it has a Ford 10 h.p. industrial engine and is steered by a single front wheel.

With a capacity of 2 cubic yds., the body is pivoted on the weight-carrying axle of the rear wheels. It is tipped by the pressure of four pads on the inner sides of the tyres. while the vehicle is slowly reversed.

The power unit has a Benjamin Whittaker overspeed governor and c6

Ford oil-washed air filter. Electrical starting is from a 6-volt lead-acid battery.

The integral gearbox has three forward speeds and reverse. Front tyres are of India 9-in. by 10-in, tractor type and at the rear, India 9-in. by 36 in. sixply equipment is fitted. Maximum load permitted by the rear tyres fitted to this vehicle is stated to be 3,612 lb. at an inflation pressure of 32 lb. per sq. in. The tyres are at a track width chosen to suit Lincolnshire rows.

The total weight of the vehicle with body is 3,760 lb., and without body 2.710 lb. Overall length is 11 ft. 6 ins.,

overall width 5 ft. 10 ins., and height 5 ft. 9 ins. Minimum ground clearance is 21+ ins. The height of the drawbar above the ground is 14 ins., and the draw-point is 12 ins, to the rear of the rear axle.

It is stated that the Sun cart can be loaded faster than horse-drawn carts or trailers, and that tipping is so easy as to increase unloading speed by six to eight times. It is capable of drawing a trailer under most conditions, claims the manufacturer.

The body can be easily removed so that light summer work, such as towing a binder, can be carried out.
