Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

REMOTE control, silence in operation, and synchronization of the twin blades are features of a new British Berkshire windscreen wiper marketed by the Houdaille Hydraulic Suspension Co., Ltd., 69, Drayton Gardens, London, S.W.10. As will be seen from an accompanying illustration, the motor, which is rated at 1135 h.p., can be mounted at a convenient point under the bonnet. Moreover, as a rubber mounting block is provided, the motor operates silently and without transmitting vibration.

Two forms of drive are available. Thus, a single cable may be employed to the gearbox unit for one wiper blade, a bar transmitting the movement to a second blade. Where a V windscreen is used, however, a twin drive is required, two cables being driven through gears mounted at the back of the motor. The two blades are thus synchronized and may be operated either singly or together through the medium of two gearboxes and controls.

A section of one of the gearboxes is shown in an accompanying illustration and the strong design and robust construction will be noted. A useful feature of the wiper arm is the provision of a cam and two small leaf springs for tensioning the blade. When the windscreen is cleaned the arm can be lifted over the cam centre, leaving ample room beneath the arm. •

The blade itself is of laminated rubber, the edges of ma2 which are treated with chemical. To deal with condensation on the windscreen, the Houdaille concern also markets a three-blade model, the outer blades being synchronized with an inner one on the driver's side.

The various components of these useful fitments are strongly made and the prices are competitive,
