Building Giant Forging Machines.

Large-scale extensions, adding 5,200 sq. ft. and 50 per cent, productive capacity to .the Coventry factory of Coventry Machine Tool Works, Ltd., the well-known maker of forging plant, have now been completed. A large section will be used in connection with an entirely new development— the building of giant horizontal forging machines, weighing 150 tons upwards. Previously, plant of this magnitude was made only in Germany and the United States.

Brisk Export Business.

Rootes, Ltd., which is the world exporter for Commer and Karrier commercial vehicles, as well as Humber; Hillman and Talbot cars, reports that export orders for these makes, during the period from August 1, 1936, to April 30, 1937, show an increase of more than 40 per cent, over the corresponding period of 1935-36, whilst

actual shipments increased by 53.5 per. cent. Export business in Commer vehicles was more than doubled during this period, the actual increase in orders being 102.2 per cent.

During April the following Government orders were given out:—By the Admiralty, for Scammell tractors. By the War Department, for Guy, Leyland Thomycroft chassis, Morris-Commercial lorries, and Baker, Brockhouse and Tasker trailers. By the Air Ministry, for tractors from Messrs. T. Crimble and Sons, Staines, Scammell and Nephew tractor bodies, Baker trailers and Brockhouse trailer chassis. By the G.P.O., for Robson bodies. By the Crown Agents for the Colonies, for chassis from Morris Industries Exports, Ltd., and Barford road rollers.

New Dodge Dealers.

The Gordon Omnibus Co. (1936), Ltd., 219, Lea Bridge Road, London, E.10, and Messrs. Zenith Motor and Engineering Works, 591, Commercial Road, -London, E.1, have been appointed dealers for Dodge vehicles. • NEW FEATURE :IN LATEST DUNLOP TYRE,

A tyre mileage in excess of half a. million has been run by the company's test cars in trying out a new safety -tyre built by the Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd. As will be seen from the-accompanying illustration, this new product has six rows of serrations, three On each side, and slots across the studs to give. good adhesion. Furthermore, the casing has been improved to resist high stresses, experience with Dunlop . giant tyres subject to heavy uSage having been applied in this connection.

It is claimed that the serrations offer greater effective length of edge against both .for7ward and sideways skidding. The extra-low-pressure range of the new tyre has tied-up shoulder-pattern blocks, designed to prevent uneven wear and to reduce noise, Shippin4 Guide for Hauliers.

Death of Leading Lanes Haulier, The death has occurred, at the age of 59 years, of Mr. John Farr, founder of John Farr and Co., Ltd., haulage contractor, of MilIgate, Wigan. He was chairman of the Road Haulage Association's Wigan branch, from its formation until 12 months ago, when he retired.
