has given his backing to a new Driver CPC course teaching emergency first aid skills to LGV drivers.
Driver First Assist (DFA) is the brainchild of former driver David Higginbottom and aims to provide 30,000 drivers with life-saving skills over the next five years.
Higginbottom said official figures show that in traffic collisions half the victims die before paramedics arrive, and that basic first aid skills could save lives. Truck drivers are often the first on the scene.
With the support of the emergency services, a seven-hour CPC course has been designed, explaining how to manage an accident scene and give emergency first aid.
Transport secretary Stephen Hammond said he was "delighted to support the initiative". Rob Flello MP said DFA would enable the haulage industry to promote crash scene first aid and crash management skills among drivers. Higginbottom said DFA could eventually be rolled out to all road users.
