SM1 45Z EMAIL: christopherwaltontaroadtransport.com P LETTER OF THE WEEK Driver CPC? Don't insult me, I've done this for 42 years IN REPLY to Edward Pargeter's letter (CM 13 June); I have, as an older driver, given up trying to advise younger colleagues because they don't want to know. It ends up in either abuse or, in one or two instances, threats of violence. This is because there is no proper inauguration into haulage now.

A young driver passes his test and is thrown in at the deep end, with no code of ethics about how to behave on the road in respect of other lorries.

If people like me have a 'wealth of experience', why is it that I am being forced to attend the Driver CPC course?

Having left school in 1971, to get a job at Leyland Motors, I served my apprenticeship in truck engineering, getting ONC. I then worked 10 years as a chargehand fitter at a local general haulage firm that trained me up through the local RTITB with a proper 'old-hand' instructor. He was good at his job and got my attention and respect.

After this, I took the Transport Manager CPC (both National and International).

In 1987 I gained my goods vehicle operator's licence and became an owner-driver — I have now been on my own for more than 25 years.

I have these qualifications, all of which require passing exams. So if we are serious about the Driver CPC, why is it not an examination that has to be passed? For someone like me with the proper qualifications and 42 years' experience, it is an insult to have to attend this course now.

It is the equivalent of a consultant surgeon or physician having to retrain as a nurse.
