Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• New regulations governing the transport of radioactive material by road have been introduced by the Department of Transport.

The measures, introduced under the Radioactive Material (Road Transport) Great Britain Regulations 1996, are desiçed to improve the standar of design, maintenance and ue of packaging and storage facilities during transit.

The DOT has implemented the regulations, which are in accord with El; guidelines, to bring them in line with those for air, sea and rail.

They have specified design requirements for the carriage of radioactive goods regularly used in industry and hospitals.

The DOT will also approve the design of packaging for "higher risk" radioactive material being taken by road in each individual case.

Transport minister Steven Norris says: "Safety on our roads is important whatever the load. However, with the increase of radioactive material being carried these new standards will go a long way to ensure it continues to be carried safely."
