• Job prospects in the transport and distribution sector are improving slightly, according to the latest quarterly survey by Manpower.
Following a gloomy start to 1991 the survey shows that 18% of transport employers are predicting new job opportunities in the third quarter, while only 9% plans to cut their workforces.
"This more positive attitude towards employment suggests the transport and distribution sectors have weathered the worst of the storm, and that those who have survived are beginning to recover their confidence," says Manpower Midlands and West general manager Mark Wilcox.
But the third quarter is always good for employment, and full recovery is still a long way off. During the corresponding period last year 26% of employers were planning to take on staff.
The regions where employment remains worst hit are the North-East, the North-West, the West Midlands and the Home Counties.
