Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A device to stop loads rolling around in the back of a van or truck is in the running for a top inventors' award.

The Permaload — designed by Vincent Ronald — is a 4cmthick board which lies on the floor of the vehicle. It contains hundreds of vertical pins, each mounted on a spring.

When a load is placed on the pins they compress, while the surrounding pins stay up and hold the goods in place.

Ronald, who hopes to get a patent and put the device on trial with Thurso parcels company 321 Haulage, has reached the Scottish final of the Toshiba Year of Invention competition. Final national judging takes place in December.
