• Cummins is to launch a range of 10and 14-litre engines to meet the 1992 EC emission regulations.
The new engines are said to offer enhanced performance, torque and driveability with a mix of mechanical improvements and the CELECT electronically controlled fuel injection and engine management system for top-of-the-range models. A version of the E465 engine with CELECT was shown by Cummins at last year's Motor Show: UK and Continental operator trials of 10and 14-litre CELECT engines are now under way.
Cummins says the changes required to meet the EC emissions laws "are not conducive to improving fuel economy", and that engineering measures will have to be taken, including the use of advanced electronics, if further gains in fuel efficiency are to be achieved.
As part of the certification process for 1991 emissions limits, the Super E320 14-litre engine is likely to become the E330; the E365 would become the E380.
