WITH the drop-off in the market for general haulage vehicles, foreign vehicle importers are taking the view that a broadening of vehicle types on offer is one means of compensating for the general haulage slump. As a result there are new models from Saviem, MAN and Scania, all aimed at the tipper market, which are being shown for the first time at this year's RHA tipping convention in Harrogate which opens today.
Tipper bodywork on three light chassis will be shown by Brade Leigh. The chassis used will be a Ford Transit 175, a Bedford CF diesel and a British Leyland Sherpa.
The body sides incorporate horizontal channelling which houses special over-centre security locks complete with flush hinges. The main undercarriage runner is constructed of aluminium with a crossplank bearer/floor system. The whole is welded up to form a monocoque assembly.
The vehicle chassis is reinforced with a light pressedsteel channel subframe flitched over stress points. The electrohydraulic tipping gear and power pack are mounted on this subframe at the front end. There is an isolation switch fitted to the cab dashboard.
The body weighs 208kg (4591b) and can carry a payload of 1.87 tonnes (1.8 tons).
Fifteen vehicles will be displayed by British Leyland ranging from the 7.5-ton Ter rier to a 32-ton Marathon tractive unit. In the static display a 32-ton Buffalo tractive unit will be shown coupled to a Scammell tipping trailer and there will also be a six-wheeled Super Mastiff with Edbro body and a 24-ton Reiver with Telehoist body.
For demonstration Bison, Reiver, Scammell Routeman and Clydesdale vehicles will be available. The Clydesdale is a 16-ton chassis with aluminium Anthony Carrimore body which provides a capacity of 7.6cum (10cuyd).
Two new developments will be featured on the stand of Crane Fruehauf. The first is the company's new wide-track high-stability bogie and the second is the "Tip and Blow" tanker which has both gravity and pressure discharge of bulk powders.
The high-stability tipper on show has four different body capacities. All the bodies are constructed in aluminium and are designed to give clean discharge .of all commodities. An air-operated top-hinged alloy tail-gate is fitted as standard to all bodies except the largest 32cum (42cuyd) model. An angle of up to 732deg can tolerated when the body fully tilted, thanks to the ne suspension.
The Tip and Blow tanker h. a capacity of 17.8cu (635cuft), is constructed fro aluminium alloy and has tapered rear-discharge cone.
A new lightweight versi( of the Tasktip range of bodi makes its debut on the Crave Homalloy stand. The saving weight, 101.6kg (2cwt) on ti standard Tasktip body, h; been achieved by reducir extruded section of the bod Also on display will be Tasktip rigid body mounted ( the new MAN eight-wheel and a Model WT 28/40 Tas. tip tipping semi-trailer and al: a triple-dropside bolted alumi ium body mounted on an EF eight-wheeler chassis. Featu ing pressed steel channel cros members interlaced with bo( runners, it includes a speci conveyor-belt system central mounted.
There will be three DA 2205 DU eight-wheelers on di play. These three vehicles ea( feature DAF's 8.25-litre turb, charged engine developir 161kW (216bhp) and 716N. (5281bft). The gearbox Fuller's RT0613 13-speed rang change unit with overdrive to and a lockable third diff mounted on the two-sprir double-drive bogie. All DA tippers now have a combin( raised air intake/moistu] separation unit. One of the three eight'heelers has a body by Wilcox tile one of the others has a Dal body built by J. Withey td. Both bodies are tipped by dbro 6LNC/9 gear.
Outside there is a two-axled 5-ton FM2000DH450 fitted rith a Dependable bulk grain ody and a 6x4 unit with a ind and ballast body made by lavid Williams Ltd.
Besides being featured on any of the other exhibitors' tands Edbro will have xamples from its range of ,pping gears on a stand of its wn. Two examples of underody gears are being shown, ne on a Leyland Buffalo and fie other on a Bedford. On the uffalo the twin-ram gear is • perated by an Edbro nineylinder combined pump and to with air controls.
Edbro bodies will also be eatured—one is a 7m (23ft)mg welded alloy body fitted o an ERF 30-tonner. There are lso two examples of Bucket .oader hydraulic skip-handling quipment, one of which will )e mounted on a Commer Comnand° chassis.
Three of the new B-series :hassis will be on display on he ERF stand. Both threeand our-axled chassis will be reresented on the stand while n the demonstration park there vill be a four-axled 31C4 oaded to 30 tons gcw.
The 25G3 chassis has a 4.3m :14.1ft) wheelbase and is powered by a Gardner 6LXB engine developing 134kW (180bhp). The transmission includes a David Brown 6A gearbox and a double-drive rear bogie with third diff lock. The body on this vehicle is Seadyke type M4 aluminium monocoque body for bulk animal-feed haulage. The body has a 23.7cum (31cuyd) capacity and is tipped by Telehoist RF5/210 tipping gear. Other equipment includes a Godfrey blower, Seadyke rotary feeder and a scavenger driver with augers.
The four-axled ERF on show is fitted with a Mackworth allwelded alloy end-tipping body with a 17cum (22cuyd) capacity tipped by Edbro 6LNC single-ram front-end tipping gear. Twin-ram Edbro gear is fitted to the four-axled chassis in the demonstration park. This vehicle is Cummins powered and has a David Brown 8A gearbox. The Fiat display will comprise an 0M55 fitted with a three-way tipping body from Romanazzi, the specialist Italian bodybuilding concern, a Fiat 130 with three-way Romanazzi tipper body, a similarly equipped Fiat 300 and a Fiat 300 with Romanazzi dumper body.
The Romanazzi bodies are made up from C-shaped sheet steel side-members which are connected by cross-members and box-shaped brackets. These are electrically welded and the structure of the body is usually completed by two end-pieces of C-shaped sheet steel. The body sides are made of sheet steel strengthened by the incorporation of vertical rods and longitudinal ribs.
The hydraulic rams are activated by a gearbox-driven pto and are halted automatically when a tipping angle of 48 deg is reached.
Hoynor Trailers will be showing the recently introduced step-frame tipping trailer. This trailer is now in full production and meets Type Approval Regulations for operation at 38 tons gcw.
The stepped body and chassis design allows a lower centre of gravity so that stability is better when tipping. The suspension is carried on large diameter tubular crossmembers pierced through the chassis. This method relieves the chassis flanges of twisting moments when scrubbing around tight turns.
The extended rearrnost of these cross-members also forms a substantial tipping pivot so that the tipped body is supported directly by the suspension. In addition, the balancebeam mounting tube doubles as an air reservoir with the relay valve screwed directly into it.
On show for the first time in the UK is an all-wheel-drive six-wheeler on/off-road dumper from MAN. Known as the MAN 38.320FDA the vehicle has a designed gross vehicle weight of 38 tonnes (37.4 tons) and features one of the new generation of VIO naturally aspirated diesels. This engine develops 330bhp at 2,500rpm and a torque of 760lbft at 1,40Orpm.
Transmission consists of a ZF 16-speed gearbox and MAN hub-reduction front, and bogie axles complete with inter-axle differentials. The bogie suspension is by twin trunnion mounted leaf springs and radius rods.
Designed capacity axle ratings are 8 tonnes (7.87 tons) front and 16 tonnes (15.75 tons) for each of the rear axles.
The cab is left-hand drive and is trimmed and equipped to the same specification as the MAN eight-wheeler.
Also on show for the first time will be MAN's 8x4 chassis in production form. The 30-tonner going on display has an outer axle spread of 6.3m (20.6ft) although a model with an outer axle spread of 6.5m (21.3ft) is also available. Power is provided by a D2556 11-litre engine developing 232bhp at 2,300rpm. Power is transmitted to a ZF six-speed gearbox with splitter. There is a lockable third diff as well as lockable cross-axle differentials. On the show vehicle Cravens Homalloy 15.29cum (20cuyd) bodywork is fitted.
There are three different chassis to be seen on the stand of Magirus Deutz, each powered by the standard Deutz air-cooled V8 engine currently fitted to all Magirus in the UK.
An alloy Wilcox body with a capacity, of 24.5cum (32cuyd) is fitted to a 30-ton 8x4 chassis. The gearbox is a ZF sixspeed constant mesh and this drives through to Deutz's own 'double-drive bogie. Tipping gear is Edbro 6SCOE. A similar vehicle is also being shown with a Dee Jay all-steel body. Also on the stand is a 6x6 designed for 26 tons on site. The bodywork is of standard overburden all-steel design, and tipping gear is Telehoist lever-type.
The fourth vehicle on show is a 232D16FS tractive unit with a designed gross train weight of 38 tons, with engine and transmission similar to the other vehicles. The unit is coupled to a 8.5m (28ft) Tasktip trailer.
Two units from the Multilift range of ground-level demountabIes will be shown at Harrogate. The ADA 600 12ton-lift capacity model is shown fitted to a British Leyland Boxer chassis, and the ADA 760 16-ton-lift-capacity model fitted to a Chrysler KT2413 24-ton chassis.
A new type of tailgate is the latest innovation to be seen on the Ultralite body made by Neville Industries. The tailgate has been developed for Tarmac Roadstone and is to be seen on a Leyland Reiver six-wheeler. The tailgate is horizontally divided and is interlocked so that the bottom section of the tailgate cannot be opened before the upper section. The Reiver has a very short overhang to enable it to discharge into pavers.
Other examples of Nevilleequipped vehicles include Nevilloy and Nimrod bodies and trailers. The Nimrod is now available in a new shorter length of 6.7m (22ft) in various body heights and is designed for hauling dense loads.
Foden distributors North Riding Garages are showing two vehicles at this year's tipping convention. The first is a 30-ton Foden eightwheeler with Gardner 6LXB, with body built by North Riding. Capacity of this body, which is tipped by Edbro 6CANN9 gear, is 14cum (18.25cuyd). The other vehicle is an identically powered Foden eight-wheeler fitted with a Metalair bulk powder tank having a capacity of 17.4cum (22.7cuyd).
On show for the first time anywhere is a new 24-ton sixwheeler from Saviem. The vehicle uses a York third-axle and is the result of work carried out by York and Saviem concessionaire Nickerson. The York suspension incorporates the usual combined load transfer and bogie lift.
The vehicle is in fact based on Saviem's SM32-240 tractive unit with • a considerably lengthened chassis to accommodate a 5.64m (18.5ft) tipping body. The vehicle on show features a York aluminium tipping body.
A normal Saviem SM32-240 tractive unit will also be on display coupled to a Crane Fruehauf trailer chassis with Wilcox body. The SM32-2 developed specially for the 1 market, features a six-cylini engine developing 1501 (202bhp) at 2,200rpm. gearbox is ZF's six-speed u with splitter.
