Drivers who were enjoying tuition last month in the very pleasant surroundings of the Northern Ireland RTITB centre on the former RAF station at Nutt's Corner, near Antrim, were not the first to undergo roadmanship instruction in that vicinity. When Ashley Taylor attended last week's opening ceremony on behalf of CM he found himself traversing roads where a somewhat less advanced form of training was given to men of his RASC company a matter of 27 years ago.
In fact very close to where the entrance to the training centre now stands he had a detachment headquarters for an extended defence exercise. Although he tried last week, he failed to discover the little potato shed where he was privileged to sleep while this event was on ! He recalls that the roof gave protection from the weather but when conditions were really wet the neighbouring brook was liable to take a new path, flowing in through one door and out the other.
