• An application for a continuation of an A licence was heard in two parts in Liverpool last week, although it was refused after the first session. The North Western Deputy LA, Mr. G. Newman, turned down the application after a spokesman for Kennans Road Services Ltd., in which name it had been made, said that the company had not in fact applied.
Mr. G. H. Newmoore, office manager of Fairfield Haulage Ltd., of which Kennans is a subsidiary, was asked by Mr. Newman if he could identify the signature on the application form as being on behalf of his company. Mr. Newmoore said that he could not and added that the base applied for was not Fairfield's.
The deputy LA said that, as the application had not been made with the authority of Fairfield, it was refused.
This appeared to be the end of the case but after a number of other applications had been heard Mr. T. Brennan came forward and told the deputy LA that he made the application on behalf of his wife, whose signature it was on the form. He said that his wife owned the business.
Mr. Newman pointed out that Kennans had been sold to Fairfield some time ago. One vehicle had apparently not gone to Fairfield but as Mr. Newmoore had said that the application being considered was made without his company's authority, it had been refused.
When asked if the vehicle in question was still being operated, Mr. Brennan said it was. There were also two vehicles on B licence which were owned by his wife, who was operating them under the name of Raby Haulage Co. Mr Brennan admitted that he was not sure that this company complied with all the regulations.
Mr. Newman repeated his reason for refusing the application and told Mr. Brennan to seek legal advice.
