A NEW type of pedestrian crossing and a new restriction on jay-walkers are being considered by Mr. Harold Watkinson, Minister of Transport. The crossings, controlled by pedestrianoperated flashing beacons, would supplement existing zebra crossings. They would be positioned on busy roads where there are not a great number of pedestrians.
The lights would start to flash when the button was pressed, and after a short delay traffic would be halted for 12-15 sec. The crossing itself would be marked with a zig-zag pattern, and the flashing globes would be amber with black stripes.
In an effort to curb jay-walking, the Minister is considering experimenting with a prohibition of pedestrians on the road within 100 yd. of a crossing. The idea will probably be tried out in selected towns.
PRINCE PHILIP'S IDEAS
A SUGGESTION that traffic islands rTh. should have roads through the centre, which could be opened up at peak periods, was made by the Duke of Edinburgh when he attended an Automobile Association luncheon last week. He also put forward the idea that the exhaustsof oil-engined vehicles should face upwards.
