NEW maximum charges for hire purchase and credit sale of vehicles cattle into effect on Tuesday. For new vehicles With four or more wheels, the maximum charge for 12 'months is now eight Per Cent,. and for similar, vehicles registered less than five years before the sale it is nine per. cent. The rate is 11 per cent. for Vehicles with less th&t four wheels or for those registered more than five'years previously. .r The new charges are a reduction of ',one per cent. on the previous ones except in the third category, where the drop is .5 per cent. Announcing 'the reductions, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and the Finance Houses Association point out that hire. purchase rates cannot be geared to Bank Rate.. Bank Rate can govern only short-term' interest rates; whereas hire-purchase charges have to take into consideration the value of Money over a oneor two-year period.
NEW CITY AND GUILDS COURSES INTRODUCED
ANEW scheme of syllabuses and examinations in vehicle service work has been devised by the City and Guilds of London Institute to meet the needs of apprentices and young craftsmen engaged in the repair side of the industry. Three courses of instruction are provided—. mechanics' work. vehicle 'electricians work, and vehicle technicians', work. The technicians' course is intended to provide further studies for students who have completed the mechanics' syllabus. The object is to familiarize them with the construction,overhaul and repair of all types of vehicle.
PARISH COUNCIL Bugs? THE Conditions of Fitness Regulations governing rural buses carrying up to 12 passengers, published by the Ministry of Transport April, might enable focal Operators or a group of local residents to start their own service. The Shropshire County Association 'of Parish Councils. discuss the possibility in their annual report and express the hope that a scheme on these lines might be started in the county. They say encouragement should be given to small local operators to begin or continue Services regarded as uneconomic by the large companies. The report adds, however, that school authorities and local government bodies might find that their own service would cost a great deal More than a commercial enterprise.
BUS REVENUE UP 15,500.
'TRAFFIC returns for May presented I. last week to Grimsby and Cleethorpes Joint Transport Committee showed that revenue increased by 15,500 over the same month last year. Total receipts were £35,148, which was an
increase of 4d. per mile. . Cllr. J. P. Murphy warned that higher wages would soon have to be paid, but he thought the increase would be a modest one.
