Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

UTSE of a special colour code to prevent 4.--1 petrol being delivered to garages and stores in mistake for paraffin is being worked out by local authority and Home Office experts. This follows a report to the Association of Municipal Corporations by the town clerk of Stockport of a case where 200 gallons of petrol were delivered when paraffin had been ordered.

The delivery was made by a tanker carrying both petrol and paraffin, but in separate compartments. Only one sale was made before the mistake was discovered by a storekeeper. After a broadcast appeal by police the purchaser was traced 'and what might have been a serious accident was averted."

Stockport Corporation have suggested that legislation should he introduced prohibiting the use of tankers divided into compartments for the delivery of mixed loads. The Association's fire service committee suggest that, short of prohibitory legislation, it might he 'possible for some device to be adopted which would serve as an adequate safety precaution.

A colour code could be used, or unions of different sizes might be fitted to the delivery hoses of the tankers. They are inviting the Secretary of State to comment on their ideas.
