L)ESP ITE the benefit of last November's fare increases, Brighton Transport Department will barely cover expenditure during the present financial year, the borough treasurer told the town council last week. He reported that in the year ended March 31, the undertaking lost £5,301, compared with the previous year's profit of £6,880.

OBITUARY

WE regret to record the deaths of SIR vir JOSEPH GURNEY BRAITHWAITE, MR. CHARLES HEWITT and MR. WILLIAM GEORGE RAILTON.

Sir Joseph, former M.P. for Bristol (North West), was Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport between 1951 and 1953. He was made a baronet in 1954. Aged 63, Sir Joseph also held a road transport directorship. • Mr. Hewitt, aged 67, was well known in North Lincolnshire as a haulier. He operated from Newell's Corner Garage, Misterton, and had been in business for 33 years.

Mr. Railton was chief inspector of Bradford Transport Department when he retired 10 years ago. He was 74.
