THE way in which British Railways are
trying to win traffic from hauliers was criticized by Huddersfield Chamber of Commerce last week. It was said that cloth manufacturers in the district were being offered substantially reduced rates.
.Mr. A. Guy Crowther, president, said low rates were being quoted for carrying piece goods to London and other destinations. Railway officials appeared to have a Selected list of customers known to be using road transport, and it seemed an unfair way of seeking new business.
Mr. C, Bernard Kaye, a manufacturer, said his mill had used road transport exclusively for a long time, but the rates now offered by British Railways were so much cheaper that they had been persuaded to try rail transport. Delivery in London the day after collection had been guaranteed.
Mr. L. V. Driffield, secretary, said every trade was entitled to the same rate, and a nationalized industry should not discriminate.
