Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Electronically-controlled diesel pumps should be available in light commercials within the next five years.

This is predicted by Lucas Diesel Systems, whose EPIC rotary diesel pump with electronic control is on trial with most of Europe's small diesel manufacturers.

Jean-Francois Cayot, who runs the Lucas division responsible for EPIC, is confident that it will soon be adopted on production engines: "EPIC should be introduced early in 1991, perhaps by Renault or Peugeot, although we are working with lots of other manufacturers."

But he adds that light commercials are unlikely to get the system to begin with because they lack the sophisticated electronic equipment featured in cars, and are more price sensitive.

Lucas claims its EPIC pump improves economy and driveability and, more importantly, reduces exhaust emissions and noise.
