THE EEC COMMISSION came under pressure this month to introduce harmonised rules to increase the minimum tyre depth tread on commercial vehicles and cars.

In a written question to the Commission, British MEP Richard Cottrell claimed that British regulations on tyres allow for less tread than in any other EEC country.

He pointed out that British drivers on the Continent

could find themselves breaking the law. "Surely such a basic safety standard should be the same in all member states,he added.

The Commission spokesman said that regulations in Britain and France laid down a 1mm minimum depth and were less stringent than in other countries.

A proposed regulation for an EEC depth of 1.6mm has been drafted, but agreement has been held up, he said.
