A LORRY DRIVER jailed for causing death by reckless driving after he had been on a drinking spree in his tractive unit has regained his HGV driving licence.
Colin Walker, of Nelson, Lancashire was jailed for nine months and disqualified from driving for five years following his conviction in 1982.
Because of that, and because of an earlier drinking and driving offence in 1977, Walker's 11(;V driving licence was revoked and he was disqualified from holding a further HGV driving licence until he passed a test.
Questioned by North Western Licensing Authority Roy Hutchings, Walker said that the disqualification on his ordinary driving licence had been removed following an application to Burnley Crown Court.
His drinking problem had been caused by family troubles.
He had been drinking and was driving his lorry, which he had taken without his employer's permission, when he hit another vehicle and killed the driver. He agreed that it was an unsatisfactory record, but said that he had learned his lesson the hard way. He had killed someone and he had to live with that.
Rescinding the order for a re-test and issging Walker with a further licence, I hitchings said he was prepared to give him another chance. lie warned Walker that he would not get another one.
If there were any further serious convictions, Walker's licence would be revoked and no further licence would ever be issued to him.
