T° improve the undertaking's finances, Newcastle upon Tyne Transport Committee are considering using conductors to collect fares from bus queues, They are also investigating the linking of services, and the introduction of a bonus scheme for platform staff.

The committee are to re-submit to the city council proposals to raise fares. A

increase on all ordinary fares, except the 14d. minimum, is suggested. The committee stated that the bus undertaking had a loss of nearly -£30,000 last year, and a deficit of about £110,000 was expected in the current year. Aid. R. A Fiat-Baldwin hydraulic braking system incorporates leading-andtrailing-shoe units in each drum. The braking area is large, and the efficiency and anti-fade properties are high.

There are four body doors. The doors to the driving compartment have drop windows, whilst the rear doors, which are 32 in. wide, each have two sliding lights. The squab of the front bench seat is adjustable for angle in three positions, and the back panels of the rear seats are ribbed to provide a strong floor for goods.

" Luxury " fittings which form part of the standard specification include a lockable petrol-filler cap, twin plastics sun visors, map pocket in the front passenger door and three interior lights, the forward one being incorporated with the rear-view mirror. Twin, self-parking electric windscreen wipers are fitted.

For reasons of space economy, the spare wheel is clamped to the front bulkhead ahead of the passenger seat, but it is disguised with a flexible cover and does not restrict leg room overmuch.

Both four-seat and six-seat versions are rated for a payload of just over 6+ cwt. when carrying a driver and no passengers. It was in
