cELF-LOADING vehicles having tipping semi-trailer bodies, were recently delivered by Leyland Motors, Ltd., to the Anglo Iranian Oil Co. The tractive unit is the Leyland EH.4AL Super Hippo, and the tipping semitrailer is by Cranes (Dereham), Ltd, Mounted immediately behind the driver's cab is a Darlington model 70 winch which is used to load and unload heavy equipment up or down the ramp formed by the tipped platform body. Apart from its lipping platform, the Crane semi-trailer is of interest iii that it incorporates a system of beam suspension.
On a cross-shaft carried on brackets bolted to the semi-trailer frame are mounted two beams which rock freely. Each pair of bogie wheels is carried on a short axle mounted on each end of the beams. The semi-trailer's eight wheels have 14.00 by 20 tyres.
The deck of the platform body is formed of 2-in, oak covered with f-in. mild steel. Arranged along the sides of the platform are short steel stanchions, whilst guide rollers and fair leads are provided to take the winch cable to any desired position. Loads of up to 20 tons can be carried.
Overall length is approximately 48 ft., and the weight nearly 20 tons. The winch gear, spare-wheel carrier and davit to lower the wheels to the. ground, and the hydraulic tipping gear were installed by Brorndow and Edwapds, Ltd.
