MORE BUSES WITH FOUR-WHEEL BRAKES.

Further Dennis Single-deckers for Service in London.

IT will be recalled that in our issue of November 9th we dealt with, the first saloon bus to be used in London with four-wheel brakes, and since the licensing authorities of Scotland Yard have permitted this vehicle to be run, others similarly equipped have been placed in service. The first vehicle of this type to run in London -was a Dennis E-type bus in the service of A. T. Bennett and Co., Ltd., the proprietor of the Admiral buses, and several others of the same make and type are now in regular commission. One of the latest of these is illustrated on this page, and it comprises a 30-seater vehicle which Dennis Bros., Ltd., of Guildford, has delivered to Messrs. Biss Bros., of Waltham Cross.

The chassis is of the forward-control pattern, the driver sitting alongside the engine. The body of this vehicle is a product of the works of Messrs. Straehan and Brown, of Wales Farm Road, London, W„ and is designed on modern lines. The seating is arranged on eoLLvcILtional lines. but the squabs are reversible and the upholstery is carried out in real leather. Access to the interior of the body is obtained at the rear on the near side, where an exceptionally wide door with a hand rail at each side is situated. So that the occupants of the interior can be assured plenty of air in the summer months, five balanced drop windows are employed on each side, whilst two Airvac venrilators are fitted in the roof to attend to ventilation in normal circumstances.

In view of their previous experience with Goodyear tyres, which Messrs. Bias found to be highly satisfactory, it was stipulated that the new bus should be equipped with tyres of this make, and these are of 36-in. by 6-in, dimensions, singles being used on the front wheels and twins on those at the rear.

A similar vehicle to that which we have briefly described has also been recently supplied to Messrs. Mason Bros., and in this case, too, the bodywork is by Messrs. Straehan and Brown.

The braking system used on these buses was described in our issue to which we referred at the beginning, hut we should mention that the front brakes are operated through a servo device which is built by Dennis Bros., Ltd., under licence from the patenteeS, RollsRoycb, Ltd.
