Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A Body with Low Loading Line, Tipped by Means of Twin Hydraulic Rams.

A

"VERY SIMPLE and compact side-tipping gear has recently been produced and protected by the Maudslay Motor Co., Ltd., Coventry. It was shown fitted to a five-tonner at the Commercial Vehicle Show at Olympia.

The body, which provides a very low loading line, lies flat on the chassia members, and in this position is locked by four bolts passing through sockets on the body and chassis. These bolts take no . weight when the body is in the running position, as the body rests on the frame.

The tipping Akar consists of a small eccentric ann plunger-type pump, situated in an oil tank under the front footboards, and driven by Means of a springloaded shaft, on the outer end of which is a pulley. This pulley can be engaged with another pulley .fitted on the clutch shaft by depressing a pedal, and if the engine is running the. two pulleys come togethei' and the pump begins to

fun6tion. .

The oil tank contains about two gallons, which, when the control tap is open, are gradually forced through pipes to the top of is ram enclosed in a chamber. In passing, it may be noted that duplicate rains and chambers are fitted at either end of the body, so that the power to tip is applied equally. In addition to this, a rack and . pinion, the former working in a guide, is fitted at each end of the body, and, being connected by means of a long rod running down the centre of the latter, serve to compensate and regulate the tipping movement at each end, and thus prevent distortion, which might occur if the load were unequally distributed.

The oil is pumped into the chamber at each end of the body, and, as the rams rerna, iii stationary, the chambers rise, and, being fixed to the body itself,

lift it from the centre line, when the bolts are removed from the sockets on one side, and so permit that side of the body .61, tip up. The two rams are. mounted on trunnions to allow them to swivel with the action of tipping. In the normal state they remain vertical, but in the extreme tip they assume, with their respective chambers, a considerable angle. The extreme angle of tip is 45 degrees. The body can he tipped either way in 40 secs., the tip taking place on the side on which the bolts and sockets form a secure anchorage for the body during the operation. The doors of the body are hinged at the top, and so, when. unlocked, automatically open outwards as the angle of tip increases. It is only when tipping that the weight of the body is taken on one pair of bolts and sockets, for in the ordinary course of affairs the body rests on the substantial side and cross-members of the frame. The body is a very stout job, the frame being composed of 4 in. by 2 in. channel steel, well gusseted at the corners and equipped with overhead hoops, which have been added for strength. • When the full tip is complete, most of the oil has been pumped from the tank into the space between the chambers and the rams. When it is desired to restore the normal position, the contiol tap is

turned and allows the oil to find its way back through the centre of the ram, via the trunnion joints, and into the tank. By turning the tap the tip can be arrested in any desired position. • The device, as the illustrations show, is extremely simple, and, if desired, could be fitted to other types of vehicles.

The Maudslay tipping wagon should prove useful to municipal authorities and read contractors, the latter often have to dump to either side of the road.
