We reproduce an interesting photograph on page 376A of this issue of a demonstration with a Commer-Simonis pump in Russia.

Croydon Borough Council has accepted the tender of Dennis Bros., Ltd., at 11,940, for the supply of two motor fire-engines.

Chief-officer Trimmer, of the Alton (Hants.) brigade, is doing his utmost to arrange for the purchase of a motor fire-engine.

Rathmines Town Council has purchased an electrically-driven first-aid machine from Messrs. Henry Sit-Donis and Co., of Waltha.mstow.

A proposal is afoot at Bath that in any new purchase of a motor fire engine, the same vehicle might possibly be held available for ambulance service.

Burnley wants tenders for a petrol fire-engine. Seepage V. (supplement) of our sundry advertisementsTenders must be lodged by the 31st inst.

Maldon (Essex) Town Council is discussing the matter of towing an existing fire-engine by motor power. Would it not be better to buy a new self-propelled machine?

Mossley (Lancs.) is about to receive a report from a sub-committee with regard to the purchase of a motor fire-engine, as the Mossley Council has not been able to come to terms with the Stalybridge brigade for assistance.

No Mechanical Breakdown.

With regard to reports which were circulated last month, as to an alleged breakdown with one of Glasgow's Halley fire-engines, while on a run to Ardrossan, we are officially informed that there was no breakdown of the vehicle, but that, when near Montgreenan, and about 10 miles horn the fire, the fire-engine, owing to the darkness and the narrow road, was driven into a diteh. It was subsequently towed out without difficulty, and, being undamaged, proceeded to the fire, where it did good work, pumping out of the harbour for about 13 hours without a hitch. Does this incident not suggest, if municipal engines are going to be lent for country runs, their being fitted with powerful head lamps—possibly of a swivelling pattern? Also, what, about good lifting jacks and paekings? Brother Dennis in the Midlands.

West Bronmich seems well satisfied with its new Dennis engine, and the machine has been much admired since its demonstration tests in Dartmouth Park about the middle of last month.

Newbury's Drawbacks.

The chief officer of the Newbury (Berks.) brigade, Captain Barton, hopes that he will soon have a motor fire-engine added to his equipment. In a recent speech, on the occasion of the annual dinner of the brigade, he pointed out the seriousness of losing 20 minutes or more in getting to a fire, and the inevitable discounting effect upon smartness in training which delays of the kind imposed. Newbury lies in a hollow, and we can quite understand the views of the chief of its brigade; so long as he is limited to horses. It must take all the heart out of him.

igcleburg.

The public ambulance department in Magdeburg is under the control of the fire-brigade. With the exception of the vehicle owned by the Saloke lied Cross Society (Saloke is a suburb of Magdeburg), which is petrol-driven, and which can be used by the fire-brigade if necessary, the ambulances are niece trim In course of time every Magdeburg station will have mechanically-propelled vehicles.

Dundee's New Argyll.

The official tests and taking over of the new 75 h.p. Argyll fire-engine, with Worthington turbine pump, took place on the 27th ult. They were carried out on the banks of Loch Lomond and at Fruin Bridge. Lifting power and jet deliveries of pump and engine were well in excess of the specification requirements. It is interesting to note that a self-starter is fitted to the engine.

Mr. ,L S. Matthew, the managing director of Argylls, Ltd., subsequently entertained ninny visitors at the Argyll works, when the guests at luncheon included the fir ema, sters of Dundee, Perth, Paisley, Govan, Partick and Edinburgh. Councillor Neave, convener of the Dundee Fire Committee, was present and responded to the toast of the Dundee Corporation in a vigorous speech. We reproduce a photograph taken in the course of the tests, and we congratulate Firemaster Weir on Ids new acquisition.
