The Hawk has always thought of the Swedes as a race of fun-loving liberals who gave the world Volvo, ABBA, cheap furniture and meatballs. But now it appears there is a darker side to their seemingly easy going nature, A survey of Swedish drivers has revealed some disturbing behaviour. When they are approaching a pedestrian crossing drivers do not slow down, even if there are people waiting; some actually accelerate. As for pedestrians, Andras Varhelyi of Lund University has found that only 5% would step out to force cars to stop. Sounds like the Swedish version of Russian roulette.
