• The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Association has launched a pilot scheme which could soon enable hauliers to relicense their vehicles over the internet.
Initially the scheme will be restricted to cars under three years of age which have no MoT requirement and are insured by an insurer which has electronic links with the DVLA.
But if it is successful, CV owners will also be able to make use of the system.
In tandem with the Internet project, a telephone relicensing trial will be undertaken using a call centre and on-line checking to handle the issue of licence disks.
The projects follow the DVLA's success in winning a grant of £279,000 from the Treasury's "Invest to save" budget. If they are well received both schemes could come online by the end of this year.
