LEGISLATION New substances • The Health and Safety Commission has published draft regulations which are designed to reduce the risk new substances put on people and the environment.

Under the proposals the Health and Safety Executive and the Department of Environment will carry out risk assessments on all new notified substances. A leaflet summarising the main points in the consultative document is also available.

Transport topics • The London Transport Museum in Covent Garden is staging two lunchtime lectures and a one-day conference this month. On 10 February Tony Banks MP will hold a lunchtime talk between 13:00 and 14:00hrs about Labour's vision for London's transport.

On 17 February Roger Bowker, managing director of East London Buses, and John Pycroft, managing director of Grey Green Coaches, will ask: Where are London's buses going? And on 24 February a one-day conference, entitled Looking Ahead, will consider the planning, organisation and operation of public transport in the future. It starts at 10:00hrs.

The lunchtime talks cost from £1 per person and the one-day conference starts at £20.00.

TRAINING Lend a hand • To help meet the requirements of the new Manual Handling Regulations, which came into force on 1 January, the National Occupational Hygiene Service is running a series of half-day courses at its Manchester headquarters. The courses offer advice on safe working practices, risk assessment and training, highlighting groups at risk and individual responsibilities They will be held on 7 April, 10 August and 23 November and cost £59 per delegate.

ROADWORKS M5 contra flow • Trucks will be banned from using the outside lanes of the M5 between Junction 19 (Gordano) and Junction 20 (Clevedon) while a segregated contraflow is in operation. Two lanes will be open for traffic in each direction on the southbound carriageway with an additional lane on the northbound carriageway. A 50mph speed limit will also be in operation.

Yorkshire jam • Be prepared for delays on the M1 between Junctions 35 and 35A (RotherhamTankersley) due to contraflow. The southbound exit is closed at Junction 35A.

Eastern threat • There are restrictions in force on the Hardwick roundabout to the south of Kings Lynn (the junctions of the A47 and A149).
