• Local authority public transport are down by more than £100 million a year, including a saving of about £40 million from bus deregulation, transport minister David Mitchell told MPs Last week.
He rejected Labour claims that the rural communities were losing out and claimed that the subsidy savings achieved elsewhere could be used to ensure their survival.
Mitchell told shadow transport secretary Bob Hughes that the 300 service changes last year reflected the fact that they now met peoples' needs — and was not a reflection of a service in crisis.
