Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A British lorry driver, facing jail in Hungary for driving away after knocking down and killing a local man, has had an amnesty plea thrown out by the Budapest authorities. George Henderson, an owner operator from Tranent, near Edinburgh, must now serve a year in prison.

He was cleared of an earlier charge of negligence when it was proved that the victim was drunk and wandering on the road, but his wife Josephine says the language barrier and confusion over the charges has added to Henderson's misery. Most of the court proceedings were translated to German — which he barely speaks.

Henderson has languished in Gayo, near Budapest since being arrested, staying in a hotel at his own expense. Now his wife says they will have to wait to see if the prison authorities take this into account and award him remission.
