Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Cummins sold more engines last year than in any year since it entered the UK market in 1956— and its sale of 9,747 units made it the market leader over 7.5 tonnes, with a 16.8% share. Total sales of Cummins truck and bus engines were 10,290, compared with Ford's 9,452 (16.2% of the market); Mercedes' 8,350 (14.7%), and Perkins/Rolls Royce's 6,699 (11.5%).

Cummins' Darlington-built B Series engines were particularly successful: 4,814 were registered in British chassis during 1987, taking 11.4% of the 1517-tonne sector where 783 were registered, compared with 217 (2.1%) in 1986.

The company also won its biggest-ever share of the 29tonnes-plus sector at 24.2% (3,515 installed), up from 21.7% the previous year. For the fourth year running the L10 was Britain's most popular premium truck engine, registered in 3,076 chassis (up from 2,153 in 1986). Runner up was Volvo's TD101, with 2,312 units installed.

Cummins recorded a 42% increase in the sale of engines for the eight-wheeler market, up to 760 units (28%). PSV sales improved to 437 engines installed, from 76 in 1986, to take a 22% share of the UK heavy-duty midi-bus and premium PSV engine sector.
