OPERATORS can now take advantage of an exchange power steering ram service being offered by Hydrosteer. Based at Arundel Road, Luton, Bedfordshire, Hydrosteer is the replacement units division of Cam Gears, original equipment suppliers of power steering rams to vehicle manufacturers.
The company has decided to enter the replacement market, as it found a number of "back street" repairers were offering poorly reconditioned units which were potentially dangerous.
Although Hydrosteer's replacement rams probably cost 50 to 60 per cent more than the "spurious" ones, they are, say Hydrosteer, brought up to full original equipment standard.
Reconditioning
When an old unit is brought in for reconditioning it is first completely stripped out and all component parts are washed to remove grease and rust.
Next, the individual parts are carefully inspected for fractures and excess wear.
Those parts which don't meet Hydrosteer's standards are scrapped and new ones • brought from stock to replace them.
During final assembly all seals and washers are renewed and correct torque settings applied to ball pins.
Finally, and this, say Hydrosteer, is the most important part, the replacement unit is thoroughly checked and tested to Q/E specification.
Testing
Testing includes fitting the ram on a special rig which simulates working conditions.
When the tests are completed the units are painted and labelled. If any of the tests are failed, however, the unit is put back tor reprocessing.
To further extend its service to the industry, Hydropteer will be offering power steering pumps, manufactured by a well known maker, on an exchange basis later in the year.
