At ;east the British are not the victims of such action to anything like the same degree as in some other countries.This comment on legislating for safety was made by Sir Kenneth Corley, president of the SMMT, when he spoke on behalf of the motor industry at Friday's TRRL meeting.
It was right, he said, that society should demand a responsible and consistently better safety, noise and pollution performance. from its motor vehicles — but to know what to demand, the people should have the full facts, including cost and other implications, set before them.
Because of the economic importance of the motor vehicle in moving people and goods, he stressed, the design regulations imposed by national governments must be practical and capable of achievements without raising the costs of purchase and operation to unacceptable levels.
