• Because of access difficulties when collecting milk in bulk from the typical small farm, the Milk Marketing Board is experimenting with a drawbar trailer outfit, comprising a "mini-tanker" of 1300gal capacity and a trailer-tanker with a capacity of 2600gal.
The trailer tanker is left in a lay-by near the farm while the mini-tanker collects the milk from the static storage tanks. The load is later transferred to the trailer tank and the mini-tanker is then ready for the next collection. A 2000gal rigid tanker is frequently too big to use for collections and employing a smaller tanker (without a trailer) would be uneconomic.
Built by Mickleover, the tank of the towing vehicle is of the standard stainless steel insulated type with a cladding of aluminium and dome ends of grp. It is based on a Leyland Mastiff chassis powered by a Perkins V8 diesel. The gross train weight of the outfit is 27 tons. The trailer tank is constructed of grp with a thickness of 9mm and was supplied by the Gloster Saro company to Mickleover for assembly on steel runners to form a semi-integral structure. It is anticipated that the shell will provide sufficient insulation to keep the temperature of the load below 48deg F.
Norde rubber suspension is fitted to the running gear and is said to represent the first application of its type to an MMB tanker. Mickleover says its superior springing characteristics reduce stresses on the grp shell.
Milk is vacuum loaded from the static tanks into the mini-tanker in the normal way and is transferred to the trailer tank under pressure. This tank is of max section, and Mickleover points out that it gives the illusion that both tanks are of approximately the same capacity, which is considered important. The tank of the towing vehicle is fitted with a larger-than-necessary rear compartment to enhance the illusion.
