Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN unusual situation was described in the 1-1Yorkshire traffic court at Leeds on Wednesday when York-West Yorkshire Services, the York operating subsidiary of the West Yorkshire Road Car Co. Ltd. (jointly owned by the company and Yorkshire Corporation) applied for a scale increase of fares.

The application was for a proportion of fares up to Is. to be increased by Id. and all fares over Is. to go up by Id. At the lower end of the scale, 25 per cent of the 3d. and 50 per cent of the 4d. fares would cost more because of adjustment in fare stages.

The case for the York-West Yorkshire undertaking was that the 40-hour week to be introduced by April 1 this year would cost £20,200 and the new sick pay scheme and overtime working of crews would cost a further £36,791.

Reductions in services would effect a saving of £9,500 but the undertaking would be £27,291 worse off over the year. Net operating income had dropped from £50,055 to £26,200. In order to restore the position they were asking for an additional £25,000 through a new fare scale.

The decision of the Commissioners will be announced later.
