DECAUSE two heavy lorries, each with a trailer carrying a steel bedplate weighing 42 tons, deviated from

their authorized route during the great fog last November, Pickfords, Ltd., and two drivers were summoned at Bradford City Court on Thursday, January 27.

The prosecution said it was at the bottom of Rodley Hill, near Bradford, that the drivers deviated from the notified route. On behalf of the daence, it was stated that Pickfords, Ltd., had not given permission for the drivers to leave the authorized route, but the men had been virtually forced to do so by the fog. They considered that if the vehicles remained stationary on a narrow road with the fog thickening, they would be a greater danger than if

they moved on to Pickfords' nearest depot, in Bradford. As soon as the drivers arrived there, they told thepolice.

Dismissing the summonses, the Stipendiary Magistrate (Dr. F. J. 0. A32

Coddington) said he was not sure that he would be right in law, but he was sure he would be doing justice. His opinion was that the weather justified the drivers in deviating from the authorized route.
