ASTATEMENT by Mr. Raymond Birch, chairman of the Public Transport Association (reported in

The Commercial Motor" dated January 21) that the six-wheeled bus was a "mechanical monstrosity" and was no longer available, has evoked an announcement that Transport Vehicles (Daimler), Ltd., Coventry, is producing a six-wheeled chassis which, fitted with a Weymann 70-seater alt-metal body, is being s.upplied to a South African operator. This new model has 'ken developed by the Daimler engineers in collaboration with officials of the Cape Town Tramways, which is about to take delivery of 20 of these vehicles.

The chassis are powered by the Gardner 6 L.W. oil engine and incorporate the Daimler fluid coupling and epieyclic gearbox. A Kirkstall bogie is fitted at the rear. Westinghouse, airpressure braking is employed, and the radiator is of large capacity, similar to that used in the CVD.650 chassis.

The vehicle ha a a wheelbase of 18 ft. 81 ins.. 11-in. by 22-in. tyres and an 8-ft-wide body. Arrangements are made for an overload of 20 standing passengers to be carried.

Leading transport executives in this country, faced with similar traffic problems to those for which the Cape Town buses were designed. are said to be interested in this new chassis.
