Waste group counts cost of comparison site

THE ROAD HAULAGE Association (RHA) waste group is objecting to a new online waste disposal comparison site, which encourages operators to reject fixed contractors for cheaper quotes.

Under the HazValue online e-procurement service, hazardous waste producers can list their products to seek competitive quotes for their purchase or disposal, but some RHA members are concerned this will cost them business.

HazValue managing director Paul Rudenko suggests some fleet managers are not aware of the Landfill and Pre-treatment of Waste Requirements (October 2007), under which materials must be separated before being sent to landfill to encourage recycling.

The group claims contractors may sell hazardous waste on and make a profit "Your current waste-handler will not come to you offering to help reduce

your costs; it's up to the individual business to fight for every penny in cost savings."

On behalf of the RHA's waste group, Nick Deal. the trade body's logistic development manager, claims members were unenthusiastic because it could cost them customers.

Although postings on

the site are free of charge, the firm will take a 2.5% cut if a purchase is made. For more information go to www.hazvalue.com
