ANOTHER PTE director general is retiring early. Desmond Fletcher, Tyne and Wear's director general since 1976, retires on March 31, after 13 years with the undertaking. He was previously director of finance, and is 57.
Mr Fletcher said last week that the PTE has reached a logical state in its development for him to retire, as the construction of the Metro and integration of PTE and National Bus Company bus services will be complete.
The Transport Bill, which will alter the relationship and objectives of the PTE, the Tyne and Wear County Council, and the Department of Transport, is expected to be law by April, and Mr Fletcher says that the time is right for him to hand over the reins to someone younger.
