The committee, consisting of Mr. G. A. Thesiger, Q.C. (chairman), Mr. R. F. Lyne, Sir Ronald Matthews, Mr. W. D. Reid, Mr. F. I. Speight, Mr. A. E. Tiffin and Mr. F. Williamson, were appointed by the Minister of Transport on August 14, 1952. Their task was " to inquire into the operation of the provisions of the Road Traffic Act, 1930, relating to the licensing of public road passenger services and to make recommendations."
Seventy-seven memoranda were submitted by bodies and individuals, and some were later expanded by further written evidence, In addition, oral evidence was given by a number of bodies. The committee met on 37 days, On nine -of them, oral evidence was taken.
The committee say that they had hoped to deliver their report earlier. Difficulties arose, however, particularly in the late submission of evidence. In addition, Mr. Lyne and Mr. E. S. Foster, secretary, were both taken seriously ill.
The report, officially entitled "Report of the Committee on the Licensing of Road Passenger Services," is obtainable from the Stationery Office at 3s. 6d. It runs to 114 pages and • 75,000 words.
