FOLLOWING the announcement by the Ministry of War Transport in connection with its producer-gas requirements, the Mobile Producer Gas Association submitted to the Director

of Producer Gas Vehicles certain proposals relating to the use of proprietary plants as opposed to the G.E.P. unit. A reply to these has now been received by the M.P.G.A. and we understand that the proposals, on the whole, have been given favourable consideration, • Exact details are not yet available, but it appears that independent concerns, engaged in the actual manufacture of plants, are to be allowed to continue building and marketing them, whilst operators required to convert to gas will not be tied to the use of the Government apparatus. This general statement is -subject to a number of reservations, but the word " manufacture," we gather, is used in a broad sense.

Thus it appears that there will be a limited supply of proprietary plants available, subject to official approval, for those who regard them as preferable to the G.E.P. models. Prices of the latter are not yet fixed, so comparisons in tvrms of value for money obviously cannot yet be made, but it is logical to assume that, in this respect, mass-production rilethods will afford an advantage: AN ASSOCIATION GET-TOGETHER MEETING

AT a meeting presided over by Mr. J. A. Kirby and attended by some 80 local operators in Leicester, a resolution was passed unanimougy establishing a Leicestershire Federation of Sob-areas of National and Local Associations, with the provision that joint meetings shall be_ held. This resulted from a desire expressed amongst operators at a joint meeting of A.R.O. and C.M.U.A. held a week previcaisly,

An interim committee comprising the ,chairmen of the respective associations in the sub-area, Messrs. J, A. Kirby (A.R.0.), W. C. Turner (C.M.U.A.), L. T. Shipman (Coach and Transport), and J. W. Ward (Leicester and District) was appointed. A further resolution, passed by a majority, called on all present to urge upon their associations the need for the industry to get together.

NEW ANTI-FREEZE OFFICIALLY APPROVED

MANY operators who have had difficulty in obtaining a satisfactory form of anti-freeze for the cooling system of their vehicles will be glad to learn that an alternative and provisionally patented mixture, under the trade name of " Froidene," has been placed on the market by Auto Vaporisers, Ltd., Central Garage, Higher Lane. Lymm,, at the price of I8s. per gallon, which has been agreed with the Ministry of Supply, although the quantity will naturally be limited.

A18 Tests of the new fluid have been carried, out by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. These have shoWn it to be satisfactory for road-vehicle cooling systems in weather conditions down to about 20 degrees F. of frost, although the company claims that at temperatures down to 50 degrees of frost, a radiator system would be unlikely to burst.

An important point is that the corrosion with almost all materials likely to be employed in radiator and engine construction is less than that of tap water, and we must add that the tests were carried out with a 50 per cent, solution of the mixture. It is important that Froidene should not be mixed with any other anti-freeze.
