WORKING OF KILMARNOCK'S MUNICIPAL BUSES.

Some Facts and Figures Extracted from the Recently issued Annual Report of the Corporation.

AT the end of its past municipal year —May 15th—the Kilmarnock Corporation 'owned 15 motorbuses, most of them being of Thornycroft make, but the number actually in use throughout the year was 10.5. During the twelve months the vehicles covered 409„063 miles and carried 4,308,197 passengers, these figures contrasting with 350,653 and 3,494,930 respectively in the previous year, when an average of 928 vehicles were in use out of a total fleet of 12 buses.

The bus revenue account for the year shows total income at 121,094 (12.376d. per bus-mile) and total expenditure at .£18,230 (10.606d. per busmile), thus revealing a balance of £2,864. Itemized, the debit side of the account shows traffic expenses at £10,074, cost of general repairs and maintenance £3,334, purchase of petrol £2,846, general expenses £1,794 and general administration expenses (proportion) £182. The average traffic revenue per route-mile was £2,990, and the average traffic receipts per busmile 12,284.

The mileage of the routescm which the buses run is very small, being only seven, but the population served by the vehicles is given as 36,000. The avernee number of miles covered per day per fares to total traffic revenue in the past municipal year were as follow 3.68; id., 36.64; 134., 41.08; 2d., 6.96; 3d., .29; workmen's, 10.83; others, .54.

During the year the fleet of buses consumed 77,450 gallons of petrol, and the average mileage travelled on a gallon of fuel was 5.28, this figure contrasting with 6.16 in the previous year.

The total borrowing powers of the Kilmarnock Corporation in respect of motorbuses amount to £29,000, of which £18,485 have been exhausted, The total capital expenditure on buses has been ±19,377, the amount expended during the year under review being £4,609, of which sum £4,168 was in respect of vehicles.
