firm has JAUPT approval for a number of Driver CPC courses. But take-up has been slow. “It’s not taken off yet and I think a lot of people are leaving it until later. In fact, the most interest we’ve had so far is from local councils. It’s not as good as we hoped.” Pargeter agrees there has been a proliferation of training firms anxious to get the industry’s business. “I call them suitcase companies,” he says. “They arrive one day and disappear the next. Once they have JAUPT approval, they only get assessed once in five years.” Pargeter’s courses were inspected two years after the firm got approval. “They sat in on one of the courses for about two hours and were more interested in the procedures, rather than the training.
“We try to keep drivers interested by making the courses interactive. So, for example, if we’re doing route analysis, we’ll pair up an older driver with a younger one so he can share his knowledge.”
