John Hunt has decided the advent of the Driver CPC will herald the end of his 25-year career in road haulage. “I’m just not going to do it,” he says. “There is no justification for it and, on principle, I’m saying they can stuff it. I will pack up driving.” After a quarter of a century behind the wheel, Hunt has long planned to quit by the time he was 50. The introduction of the Driver CPC has made that decision easier, providing he can find something else to pay the bills.
“I never intended to carry on past 50 anyway and this coincides with the Driver CPC. I don’t believe it will improve standards because it doesn’t even assess driving. How can anyone assess a driver’s mistakes without even watching them take a vehicle on the road?
“All they are doing is burdening people like me with time-consuming exercises and additional costs, which I cannot claim back. Someone should send the EU some colouring books and crayons – their time would be better spent doing that.”
